Importance: As the cannabis industry continues to grow, addressing the issue of overconsumption becomes increasingly crucial. In preliminary studies, psilocybin is showing promise for treatment of substance use disorders like alcoholism and tobacco use. It is also noted that psilocybin carries a low risk for dependency and toxicity (de Veen et al., 2016.) The current methods to support overconsumption of cannabis continue to be limited. Nurse-led interventions can support people struggling with overconsumption of cannabis in shifting the way they consume with education, mindfulness-based tools, and empowerment.
Objective: The beta trial, conducted in the fall of 2023, with a select group of 8 participants, was designed to assess several variables, including the amount of cannabis consumed, financial expenditure on cannabis, as well as subjective experiences and well-being.
Design, Setting, and Participants: This 6 week beta trial was completed virtually via ZOOM during fall of 2023. Adults aged 29 to 49 years who identify with problematic cannabis dependency that is interfering with their daily life and overall well being. Enrollment occurred September 2023 and the assessment of outcomes started November 2023 continuing to April 2024. A total of 12 participants were assessed for enrollment with 9 enrolled. Total of 8 participants concluded the 6 week program with 1 participant dropping out in week 2 for unknown reasons.
