2024 Update to the All-States’ Cannabis Testing Regulations
The purpose of this study was to update the 2022 “All States Cannabis Microbial Required Testing Compendium” and to update and expand our analyses of the required microbial testing regulations for the four primary cannabis product types - flower, concentrate, infused edibles, and infused non-edibles. All analyses were performed to record the state of cannabis microbial testing regulations in all US jurisdictions, identify testing trends over a 4 year period, and identify a consensus set of required tests to reduce public health risk.
The regulations for medical and adult-use cannabis programs in all legalized U.S. jurisdictions were reviewed. For each jurisdiction, a list of required microbial tests with the corresponding action level was recorded for each product type. Comparative analyses were conducted within each product type (flower, concentrate, edibles, and non-edibles) and the data from 2019 & 2023 were compared for microbial testing of flower product samples.
Learning Objectives:
1. For 4 cannabis product types, the number of required microbial tests, action levels, and test combinations varies from state to state.
2. A national cannabis flower microbiome study can identify all the human pathogens that may allow an expert panel to propose a single microbial testing regimen.
