The effect of Air Velocity in cannabis CEA

Airflow is a critical yet under-characterized factor in controlled environment cannabis production. This study evaluated the effects of targeted airflow manipulation on canopy uniformity, yield, and water use efficiency within an indoor cultivation system. Environmental parameters (temperature, relative humidity, and VPD) and plant responses were assessed across zones with differing airflow patterns. Optimized airflow reduced microclimate variability, resulting in improved canopy uniformity, increased yield, and more efficient water use. In contrast, excessive airflow increased the risk of mechanical damage, particularly in lignified tissues. These findings identify airflow management as a key driver of both productivity and resource efficiency in cannabis cultivation.

Learning Objectives:

  • Assess how different airflow velocities influence canopy uniformity, yield, and water use efficiency in controlled environment cultivation systems

  • Identify how air velocity can be used as a crop steering tool
