Cannabis Product Recalls, All States Compendium, Allows Identification of Gaps in Safety Surveillance Regulations

The purpose of this study is to create an ongoing compendium of cannabis product recalls by state and perform analyses within and among states to make general observations, identify historic trends, and identify gaps to enhance consumer awareness and safety.

Product recalls are one of many tools that are used to protect cannabis patients and consumers. There are many issues that may cause a product recall, such as a test that detects a chemical or microbial contaminant that exceeds the action level.

As of November 2023, 25 US States have legal Adult-use and Medical Cannabis Programs, and 14 States have only legal Medical Cannabis Programs. All State Cannabis Programs have adopted testing regulations, which include tests to determine cannabinoid potency and detect product contamination.

  • Examine the location, quality, and complete listing of cannabis recalls varies state to state

  • Review the primary reason that caused a recall was due to a required test failure

  • Understand further research must be conducted after obtaining additional recalls via Freedom of Information Act requests
BIO
Dr. Sherman Hom is the Director of Regulatory Affairs at Medicinal Genomics Corporation (MGC) that markets genetics-based cannabis tests and breeding technologies. At MGC, Sherman provides recommendations to cannabis regulatory agency officials that are tasked with drafting and/or modifying cannabis, hemp, and psychedelic mushroom microbial testing regulations to ensure safe products for patients and consumers. He is a member of the AOAC Cannabis Science Program, ASTM International D37 Cannabis Committee, Association of Food and Drug Officials Cannabis Committee, National Cannabis Laboratory Council, and the Colorado Public Health and Environment Cannabis Science and Policy Forum. Before MGC, he worked at the New Jersey Department of Health, Division of Public Health & Environmental Laboratories for 21+ years as a Program Manager of various clinical diagnostic testing units, which included the Cannabis Laboratory Microbial Testing Laboratory. Sherman received his B.A in Biology from the University of California at San Diego, PhD in Microbiology from the University of California at Davis, and was a Postdoctoral Fellow in Molecular Genetics at The John Hopkins University.
