Workplace Safety in Cannabis: Creating a Sustainable Safety Culture while Navigating Uncharted Risks

In the growing and often misunderstood cannabis industry, building a sustainable safety and security culture requires innovation, resilience, and a deep understanding of the unique challenges it presents. In this dynamic session, Tenay Woodard, Director of Safety and Security at Kiva Brands, and Karla Rodriguez, CEO and Co-Founder of Eqo Insight, will share their combined expertise in transforming safety practices in an industry known for its ‘hippie’ roots.

Part one of the presentation will focus on the strategic creation of sustainable safety and security programs when faced with limited resources in a loose safety culture. Tenay will emphasize the importance of being a change agent in building a cohesive and effective safety program from the ground up, and how to implement and manage an effective workers' compensation program. In part two, Karla will address the uncharted safety concerns specific to the cannabis industry. Drawing from her extensive background in cannabis emissions testing, Karla will delve into the research and development that goes into evaluating and creating a comprehensive respiratory protection program to address the unique job hazards in cannabis manufacturing. Together, both sections will guide attendees through the process of proactively creating innovative safety protocols in an industry where safety data is scarce, ensuring the health and safety of employees in this rapidly growing sector.

Learning Objectives:

  • Create sustainable safety programs with limited resources ensuring continuous compliance and safety improvements

  • Evaluation and implementation of respiratory protection programs tailored to the unique operations of cannabis manufacturers where safety data is limited or non-existent

BIO

Karla Rodriguez holds a BS in Chemistry from the University of San Francisco, where she researched the thermodynamics of electron transfer reactions in ruthenium complexes in the presence of halide salts. She then dedicated eight years working in the lab, mastering organic and inorganic analysis via GCMS, ICP-OES, ICP-MS, and HPLC for the environmental and cannabis testing industries. The latter part of her career focused on laboratory management, team development, and business development. As a Lab Director she built the first-of-its-kind cannabis emissions testing laboratory developing analytical methods to evaluate consumer safety of inhalable cannabis products by studying the physical and chemical changes observed in cannabis smoke and aerosol. Currently, Karla is the CEO and Co-Founder of Eqo Insight, an independent laboratory and safety consulting firm providing the cannabis, environmental, and biotech industries support conducting cannabis emissions studies, evaluating workplace exposures, developing and validating analytical methods, maintaining and/or developing robust quality assurance programs critically focused on data integrity. Additionally, Karla is the Chair for the NCIA’s Cannabis Manufacturing Committee, a national cannabis advocacy organization, and an active member of ASTM’s D37 Committee dedicated to creating standardized methods for the cannabis industry.
